Study Tips

Up Right

Below is a list of suggestions for successful studying. Obviously there is no "best" method to study since different people learn differently. Nonetheless the items listed below are, in my experience, helpful to a great many students. Read them , think about them and incorporate them into your individual study habits as you see fit. Feel free to contact me (Frank Bäuerle) at bauerle@ucsc.edu or 459-2964 if you have any questions or would like to add another item to the list.

bulletBe organized; know what's due and when.
bulletMake study plans for the day and week.
bulletSet reasonable and achievable goals. You can do this for instance by breaking down a goal into smaller units. Example: Instead of a broad goal like "Prepare for the midterm" break this down into "Do the practice exam; go to the review session; make list of formulas to memorize; ....".
bulletKnow times and locations of available resources. These web pages will assist you in doing that, but I would still recommend you have a page where you always record important information. For instance the first or last page of your notebook with the lecture notes is very suitable for that.
bulletMake frequent use of available resources. These resources are there for you !
bulletIf possible try to be prepared for exams a day or two early. This gives you enough time to get final questions answered and avoids late panic (which is usually counter-productive).
bulletGet enough sleep before exams days. All night cramming will do more harm than good for most people. This is especially true for 8 o'clock exams.
bulletBalance work and play. Give yourself room to have some fun too.
bulletForm a study group. Ideally a study group should have 3-5 students. Make sure that everybody contributes and understands.
bulletStay on top of things; it is very hard to catch up in the quarter system. This is especially true in Mathematics.
