Homework assignments are based on the lecture and the textbook. Homework will be assigned, submitted and graded on-line at  http://west.ilrn.com/ilrn/. I will e-mail you the assignments as a PDF file or you can get them from the class web site or the http://west.ilrn.com/ilrn/ web site. First you need to sign up for an account on Ilrn and use the PIN E-GPE45G2VZG7C to get access to the homework for this class. More information about this is on the syllabus and will be given in class.

The first homework is due Sunday, October 7th. You can download a PDF-file with similar questions here.

bulletHint about how your on-line homework connects to your hardcopy textbook: the problems are based directly off the book. To find the corresponding problem in the book of a given homework problem, use the pdf file of similar problems. At the end of each problem is a cryptic code that contains the info: For instance, the first problem in the first assignment has code

stet06.02.01.01ab

this means Stewart  Early Transcendentals 6th edition, Chapter 2, Section 1, Homework problem 1a and b.

bulletHOMEWORK ACCESS:
S
ince so many of you had problems with the access code for the homework
based on the sixth edition of Stewart, and the quality of the solutions in
the sixth edition homework was lousy (at least in the 2.2 section), I have
decided to switch back to use the homework based on the 5th edition. This
material is accessible without a content access code, so your course code
alone will suffice to access the homework from now on. This content also has
been around for a few years, so it is almost free of errors.

I have placed the assignments for you on ILRN and the pdf's on the class web
site; on ILRN it will say Fall 06 in the title, but that is irrelevant.
There is now a new assignment on sections 2.1 and 2.2 available. You can
either do the one based on the sixth edition or the one based on the fifth
edition. I have also made both assignments extra credit (which will count
towards to homework score). This does not mean you don't need to do them,
but if you have finished your work on the pdf problems for the sixth
edition, and have access issues for the homework of the sixth edition, you
don't need to do the new assignment again unless you want the extra credit.

Okay, so I hope we can now move beyond stupid technical issues and get back
to studying Calculus!
bulletFor homework on section 2.2 off the 5th edition, ignore questions 2,3,and 6.

bulletIf you want to prepare yourself for the class, review your  Algebra: particularly factoring, completing the square, simplifying and rewriting all kinds of algebraic expression and solving all kinds of equations.
and Precalculus: particularly functions, inverse functions, graphs, trigonometry and trigonometric identities.

There is an excellent on-line diagnostic test you are encouraged to take to assess areas of algebra/precalculus you might want to review:
The link to the diagnostic test is:
http://mdtp.ucsd.edu/OnLineTests.shtml

If you need to review further, I have set up an on-line resource for you to do so. This is an excellent software product called ALEKS, and unfortunately using it will cost some money since it is produced by a company and not UCSC.
The course code for precalculus review for Calculus is
GTMHT-RUWLV and you enter this code where you sign up: http://www.aleks.com/sign_up
Then you have to purchase access. Follow the link to do so, for instance 6 weeks access will cost $21 roughly.  Send me an e-mail or come by during office hours if you have questions.

Here is how this works:
You take an assessment test at the beginning and let the program guide you to what you need to review. This is an excellent resource for
independent review work.

You can do some of this in part with our textbook by studying the sections  in Chapter 1.
bulletMandatory discussion sections will start the second week of classes on Wednesday 10/3. More on all that in lecture.
